# Connecting AI assistants

Add KleioBase to Claude, ChatGPT or an AI coding tool so it can read and work on your research, and disconnect it again.

You can connect KleioBase to an AI assistant you already use, such as Claude, ChatGPT or an AI coding tool. The assistant can then look things up in your research and, if you allow it, upload records, edit people and confirm extractions for you.

Connecting assistants is included with the Researcher, Archivist and Professional plans.

## Add KleioBase to Claude

1. In Claude, open **Customize > Connectors**, select **Add** and choose to add a custom connector.
2. Name it KleioBase and paste this address: `https://kleiobase.com/api/mcp`
3. Claude opens a KleioBase page. Sign in if asked.
4. Choose **Read only** (Claude can only look) or **Read and write** (it can also make changes), then select **Allow access**. Select **Deny** if you change your mind.

On a Claude Team or Enterprise plan, an owner or admin of your Claude organization adds the connector first, then you select **Connect** next to it.

## Add KleioBase to ChatGPT

1. On chatgpt.com, open **Plugins**, select the plus button, then select **Add custom MCP server**.
2. Name it KleioBase and paste this address: `https://kleiobase.com/api/mcp`
3. Choose **OAuth** as the sign-in method, accept the risk warning, then create it.
4. ChatGPT opens a KleioBase page. Sign in if asked, choose **Read only** or **Read and write**, and select **Allow access**.

If your ChatGPT still shows the older **Settings > Apps** page instead of **Plugins**, select **Create** there and follow the same steps.

This works on ChatGPT on the web with a Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu plan. On Pro, ChatGPT can only look things up, not make changes. On a Business, Enterprise or Edu plan, an admin of your ChatGPT workspace may need to give you permission or add KleioBase for you.

## Add KleioBase to another assistant

1. In your assistant, add a custom connector (it may be called a remote MCP server, an app or an integration).
2. Paste this address: `https://kleiobase.com/api/mcp`
3. Sign in on the KleioBase page that opens, choose **Read only** or **Read and write**, and select **Allow access**.

The address is also shown at [Settings > Developer](/settings/developer), with a copy button.

## What the assistant can do

Most of what you can do in KleioBase: search your people and records, read family trees and timelines, upload record photos, run extraction, review the scan, confirm records, organise with folders and tags, and merge duplicates.

Anything that deletes, changes or merges your research is marked as destructive, so most assistants ask you before they do it. Looking things up never needs your approval. Moving people or records to the Trash can be undone from the Trash, and a merge can be undone. Emptying the Trash cannot.

Credits work exactly as they do in the app: uploading is free, and processing a record uses credits. Photos must be JPG or PNG. For a PDF, save the pages as images first.

## Disconnect an assistant

Open [Settings > Developer](/settings/developer), find the assistant under **Connected apps** and select **Revoke**. It stops working straight away. You can connect it again later.

## Your data and the assistant

When an assistant reads your research, that information is handled under the assistant provider's own terms and privacy policy, not ours. Connect only assistants you trust, and choose **Read only** if you only want answers.
