# Folders and tags

Sort people and records into folders and label them with colored tags so a large tree stays easy to work through.

People and Records can both be organized with folders and tags. You never have to use them; if you don't create any, the pages look and work exactly as before.

## Folders

A folder holds people or records, and each person or record sits in at most one folder. People and records have separate folders, so a folder you make on the People page only appears there.

- Click **New folder** to create one where you are. Folders can go inside other folders, up to 10 levels deep.
- Click a folder to open it. The path at the top shows where you are; click any part of it to go back up.
- To file things, select them with their checkboxes and choose **Move to folder**, or drag them onto a folder or onto the path at the top. You can also change a person's or record's folder from its own page.
- Use a folder's menu to rename it, move it, or delete it. Deleting a folder never deletes anything inside it: its contents move up one level.

When you search at the top level, you search everything, including what is inside folders. When you search inside a folder, you search that folder and everything below it.

To upload new records straight into a folder, pick it from **Save to** at the top of the upload workspace before you upload.

While you review a record in the upload workspace, you can also file things before you confirm. **Record folder** and **Record tags** apply to the record itself. Each person in the record has their own folder and tag controls next to their name; those choices are applied to the new people when you click Confirm.

## Tags

Tags are labels such as "To research" or "DNA match". A person or record can have as many tags as you like, and the same tags are shared between People and Records.

- Select items and choose **Tags** to add or remove tags. Type a new name to create a tag and pick its color.
- Use the **Tags** filter to show only items with a tag. With several tags picked, choose **Any** to see items with at least one of them, or **All** to see items with every one.
- **Manage tags** in the filter lets you rename, recolor, or delete a tag. Deleting a tag only removes the label; the people and records stay.
