Transcribe Old English Wills

An old English will names more of a family in one document than almost any other record. Children, sons-in-law, grandchildren, siblings, the executors who were trusted with the estate and the neighbors who witnessed it can all appear together. It is also written in a hand most people cannot read - often secretary hand - with spelling that changes from line to line, and it usually ends with a probate clause in abbreviated Latin.

KleioBase reads wills and gives you a modern English reading, then links every person named into one connected family archive. Reading is where it starts.

How KleioBase reads a will

You upload a scan or a photo of the will. KleioBase reads the handwriting and gives you a transcription with the original spelling alongside a modernized reading. It then extracts everyone the will names, with their role: testator, child, in-law, grandchild, executor, overseer, witness.

The probate clause matters. The Latin note at the end records when the will was proved and before whom. KleioBase reads it and records the court official, so you know when and where the will was accepted, not only when it was written.

What we tested before writing this page

We ran the last page of William Shakespeare's 1616 will through the same extraction every upload uses. It came back with twelve people: Shakespeare himself, his two daughters, his son-in-law, his granddaughter, the two overseers, four witnesses, and the official named in the Latin probate clause. The two overseers came back without that role marked, and Francis Collins, who was also a witness, was not listed among the witnesses - exactly the kind of role detail to check before you confirm. That is one page, not an accuracy figure, and we are not claiming one.

From a scan to a connected profile

Reading the will is step one of four:

  1. Upload the scan or photo.
  2. Process it - KleioBase reads the will and pulls out the people and their roles.
  3. Review the result and fix anything the AI misread. Secretary hand, abbreviations and people named twice in different roles are where wills get tricky.
  4. Confirm it - KleioBase creates or updates person profiles and links the will to them.

Once confirmed, the daughter named in her father's will can be linked to her own baptism and marriage, and the will becomes a source on every profile it names. As the archive grows, KleioBase suggests likely duplicate people to merge and points out where a generation is still missing.

Why wills are hard, and how the review step helps

A will is a list of people the testator still owed something to, not a list of everyone in the family, and most wills you will read before 1858 are a clerk's registered copy rather than the original. Who is missing, and why, is often the most useful thing in it. Our guide to pre-1858 English wills covers what a will does and does not prove.

KleioBase gives you a first reading and then hands you the controls. You confirm what is right and correct what is not, and nothing enters your archive until you do.

Frequently asked questions

Can KleioBase read a will in secretary hand?
Yes. It reads early modern English handwriting, including secretary hand, and gives you a transcription with the original spelling alongside a modernized reading. Every result comes back to you for review before anything enters your tree.
Does it read the Latin probate clause?
Yes. The probate clause at the end of a will is usually in abbreviated Latin. KleioBase reads it and identifies the court official who proved the will.
Who does it pick out of a will?
Everyone the will names - the testator, children, in-laws, grandchildren, executors, overseers and witnesses - each as a separate person with their role. A will names people for many reasons, so check each role when you review.
What happens after a will is read?
KleioBase links the people into person profiles, so a daughter named in her father's will can be connected to her own baptism and marriage records.
